I may be going slow but at least I am going
If you’re anything like me you’ve always thought that the idea of making a game sounds fun. And you’ve maybe even started and stopped a few times because the reality is that - it’s incredibly daunting. I work in technology and I’m intimidated by the prospect. However, one of my goals for this creating this website was to give myself some motivation to stick through the hard parts so I will be outlining my path to attempting to build, well, something, anything!
But that all starts with very humble beginnings and so for this first day I will let you in on a secret. I didn’t even install godot yet.
Like all good things I began by consulting the documentation.
I know that it’s not a +30hr youtube course but the reality is you’re not going to watch that and neither am I.
However, this is a bite-sized intro that talks about the general structure of godot and lays out the fundamentals pretty quickly. Definitely worth at least a skim.
I spent a little bit of time here which honestly felt like a Python refresher. However, I knew I wasn’t going to be using C# which did mean I was going to be using GDScript (and you knew that too because you read the opening doc, right?) Either way, I felt this was time well spent especially if you’re new to programming.
This will actually take you a bit of time there are almost 30 lessons and I would honestly do them all. If you’re actually interested in trying to build a game then I want you to accept that it’s going to take so, so, so, much more time than you think it will and embrace the process. Even doing half of all the lessons might be too much for one go. But, if you stay with it and do a little bit each day, eventually you will make it. And you can check back here day to day and keep up with my own progress as well. Or, if you’re reading this in the future you’ll already know if I ended up finishing or not.
